Accessing Your Self Storage Unit

We will email you the security access codes and any information related to locating your unit 1-2 days before your move-in date. If you haven’t received this information by then please get in contact with us.

Weather — Moving into Self Storage When it’s Raining

Sometimes trying to find a dry day around here feels about as likely as picking the winning lottery numbers. We understand that it may not always be possible to pick the perfect weather day when planning the move into your self storage unit but if you can it will make a significant difference with regards to protecting your items over the long term.

Rainwater can get carried inside your storage unit on your items and feet in a quantity that you wouldn’t quite imagine. Circulating this rainwater back out of the container becomes quite difficult, especially in winter, and it can become trapped inside.

If you find yourself in the situation where a rainy day is unavoidable a few actions you can take are:

  • using some old towels as a doormat for the unit
  • park your removal vehicle as close as you can to minimise the transfer time
  • have a dedicated drier inside who can dry your items as they arrive

After the fact, it may also be a good idea to buy a few Absorpoles to help with controlling the excess moisture trapped in the container. You can buy these from us here.

Padlock

Recommending a specific padlock that would definitely fit any given container is difficult because their sizes vary slightly. However, here is some general advice.

Between the doors you will find a lock box which is basically a box for your lock 🤣. The lock box is the safest way to lock your unit. When you are using it the padlock can only be accessed from below.

If you turn up on moving day and your padlock doesn’t fit in the lock box then you can try and put it on the right hand door latch.

In our experience the easiest style of padlock to choose (to have the highest chance of it fitting) is the standard ‘U’ shaped shackle style 🔒. Make sure the shackle is 2-3 inches above the body. The likelihood is that this will either fit in the lock box or on the door.

In our opinion the most secure style of padlock is the rectangular box shape. If you go for this style then pay close attention to this. The locking pin and key hole must face the same direction for use in the lock box. You can only access the lock box from below.

Opening and Closing the Storage Unit’s Doors

We would never want to teach our grandmother how to suck eggs but at the same time … a lot of people seem to struggle with this. If you assume that both doors need opening at the same time, you would be wrong. You need to open the right hand door first. And you need to close the right hand door last.
